Readability Best Practices
Target a Grade 7-8 Reading Level
Most successful web content targets a Flesch-Kincaid Grade of 7-8. Even highly educated audiences prefer easy-to-scan content online. Lower reading levels correlate with higher engagement and lower bounce rates.
Keep Sentences Under 20 Words
The average sentence length for web content should be 15-20 words. Sentences over 25 words are significantly harder to parse on screens. Mix short punchy sentences with longer explanatory ones for good rhythm.
Break Up Long Paragraphs
Online readers scan more than they read. Keep paragraphs to 2-3 sentences (50-100 words). Wall-of-text paragraphs cause readers to skip ahead or leave the page entirely.
Use Familiar Words
Choose common words over jargon when possible. "Use" beats "utilize," "help" beats "facilitate," "start" beats "commence." Simpler vocabulary increases comprehension speed without sacrificing meaning.
