Internal Linking Best Practices
Use Descriptive Anchor Text
Avoid generic phrases like "click here," "read more," or "learn more." Anchor text should describe the destination page's topic. Google uses anchor text as a relevance signal for the target page.
Aim for 3-5 Internal Links Per Page
Each page should link to 3-5 other relevant pages on your site. This distributes PageRank, helps Google discover pages, and keeps users engaged longer. Important pages should receive the most internal links.
Diversify Your Anchor Text
Using the same exact anchor text for every link to a page looks unnatural. Vary your anchors: use the page title, related keywords, partial matches, and natural phrases. Diversity signals editorial quality.
Avoid Duplicate Destinations
Linking to the same URL multiple times from one page dilutes the signal. Google typically only counts the first link to a given URL for PageRank purposes. Consolidate to a single, well-placed link with strong anchor text.
Never Nofollow Internal Links
Adding rel="nofollow" to internal links wastes crawl equity and prevents PageRank flow within your own site. Save nofollow for untrusted external links, sponsored content, or user-generated content.
