One H1 Per Page
Every page should have exactly one H1 tag that describes the page's primary topic. Multiple H1s dilute topical focus and confuse search engines about the page's main subject. The H1 should match or closely relate to the title tag.
Never Skip Heading Levels
Go from H1 to H2 to H3 in order — never jump from H1 to H3. Skipped levels break the document outline, hurt accessibility for screen reader users, and signal poor content structure to search engines.
Headings as a Table of Contents
Your heading structure should read like a table of contents. If someone only read the headings, they should understand the page's full topic hierarchy. Use descriptive, keyword-rich headings rather than generic labels like "More Info."
Keep Headings Concise
Aim for headings under 60-70 characters. Long headings are harder to scan and may get truncated in navigation menus, breadcrumbs, and table-of-contents widgets. Front-load the most important keywords.
