Search responsibilities across a franchise network

Franchise SEO for corporate teams and local operators

When corporate marketing controls the website while franchisees manage local information, even an hours change needs an agreed owner. I offer franchise SEO to organize location pages and Google Business Profiles around those responsibilities. The first job is to establish which units exist, who controls their information and what each location can legitimately publish.

A unit inventory before a network rollout

I would begin with the operating units, their websites and profiles, including closures or ownership changes. Each record needs the services available at that unit and the person authorized to approve changes. A corporate brand list alone cannot establish profile eligibility or tell us which information a local customer needs.

Google's rules for chains and brands call for consistent names and categories where the underlying business is the same. The review also checks exceptions against the actual operation. Adding a city or service keyword to the business name must not replace the name customers recognize.

An ownership agreement for shared and local information

The engagement defines responsibility with your team. This is a proposed starting point, adapted to your franchise agreements and systems.

DecisionResponsibility to agree
Brand names and shared templatesCorporate approves the naming rules, page structure and escalation route for exceptions.
Local services and opening hoursThe operator confirms what is available and who can approve routine or holiday changes.
Profile accessThe business retains ownership, with permissions assigned to the people doing the agreed work.
Opening, moving or closing a unitA named owner coordinates changes across the location page, profile and relevant business listings.
ReportingCorporate and operators agree on the comparison period and distinguish recorded interactions from confirmed business outcomes.

Useful location pages within shared brand standards

A location page should help someone choose or contact that unit. I would review the location finder and navigation, then determine what the template needs from each operator. Depending on the business, that may include services, hours, access details or a local contact route. Shared branding can coexist with information specific to the unit.

The proposed page map identifies useful destinations and duplicated content before new URLs are created. A franchise territory does not automatically justify another Business Profile. Each profile must meet Google's eligibility rules. A service area should describe where that business operates rather than imply a customer-facing office in every town.

A pilot with checks before wider implementation

Map the units

Reconcile location pages, profiles and operating facts. Record access gaps and unresolved ownership.

Agree on responsibilities

Define shared standards and local approval rights. Identify the person handling changes that affect several systems.

Test selected units

Apply the agreed page and profile changes to a representative pilot. Inspect published information and the enquiry route.

Review and extend

Correct template or approval problems before a wider rollout. Report units separately so missing data remains visible.

Corporate SEO context applied to local responsibilities

My documented background includes employment as Global SEO Lead (Corporate SEO) at Shopify from 2015 to 2022. That corporate SEO experience is relevant when template decisions and approvals involve several teams. For a franchise engagement, the proposed method gives those decisions owners before local implementation begins.

You receive an agreed unit inventory and responsibility map, followed by prioritized page and profile tasks and a pilot review. Implementation and ongoing management depend on your systems, available access and the scope we approve. Legal interpretation of franchise agreements and ownership disputes requires your appropriate advisers.

This service fits a network that can appoint both corporate and local contacts. If the issue is confined to one business, local SEO may be the appropriate scope. A large site whose problem is architecture across departments may need enterprise SEO without a franchise program.

Common questions

Can every franchise territory have a Google Business Profile?

A territory by itself does not establish eligibility. The review checks how each unit operates and applies Google's location and service-area rules. Virtual addresses cannot substitute for eligible business locations.

Must every unit use exactly the same page content?

Shared templates can retain the brand's structure while allowing accurate local information. The content plan specifies what corporate supplies, what operators must confirm and which differences justify their own copy.

Can you start with a small part of the network?

Yes. We can agree on a pilot that includes the operational differences the wider rollout must handle. Its purpose is to test the content requirements and approval process before extending the work. It does not guarantee a ranking result.
